PHILFEJA Delegates Attend 15th ASJA-ASCOJA-JAOL International Symposium and 25th ASCOJA International Conference

PHILFEJA delegates headed by President, Ms. Junelyn Pagunsan and Trustee, Mr. Philip Sanvictores, attended the 15^th ASJA-ASCOJA-JAOL International Symposium and 25^th ASCOJA International Conference held on October 4 and October 5, 2019 respectively. Both events were held at the Don Chan Palace Hotel and Convention in Vientiane, the capital city of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR).

The 15^th ASJA-ASCOJA-JAOL International Symposium was centered on the theme “Food Safety-Advancing ASEAN and Japan Cooperation.” The presentations shared the different experiences and best practices of the respective ASEAN countries and Japan when it comes to food safety. A panel discussion was held after the presentations.

The 25^th ASCOJA International Conference, on the other hand, gave a venue for speakers from ASCOJA member associations to share their country’s engagements and preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This year’s conference was entitled “Succeeding Together ASEAN and Japan- Towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

A day dedicated to Sports and Cultural Activities was also held on October 6, which toured participants to different temples and markets in the city. They visited several important cultural sites including Wat Si Muang temple, Patuxay Monument, Wat Si Saket temple, and the Hor Pha Keo Museum. After the city tour, the PHILFEJA delegates enjoyed traditional Lao cuisine at the Tao Salat Market and Shopping Mall.

In the afternoon, ASCOJA and ASJA held a meeting to discuss a variety of matters including the possibility of changing the hosting of ASCOJA Conference and ASJA Symposium from every year to every two years. Matters relating to the number of undergraduate scholars from ASCOJA Member countries for the Monbukagakusho Scholarship was also discussed, followed by PHILFEJA’s updates regarding the ASJA-ASCOJA-PHILFEJA Symposium 2020.

The delegates were then treated to a Gala Dinner prepared by the Japan Alumni Association of Laos (JAOL) for all delegates and guests. ASCOJA member countries presented their own cultural performances during the dinner party.

Registration Now Open for 42nd Philippines-Japan Friendship Golf Tournament

Registration for the 42^nd Philippines-Japan Friendship Golf Tournament is now open. Slots are limited to 144 players only (36 teams). Interested players can register through the event’s online registration page.

The Philippines-Japan Friendship Golf Tournament is an annual tradition of the association aimed at fostering friendship and cooperation between Filipinos and Japanese. The tournament follows a four-man team Scramble (Best Ball) honesty game and requires at least one Japanese or one Filipino player in each team.

The 42^nd Philippines-Japan Friendship Golf Tournament is scheduled on February 17, 2020 at The Country Club, Santa Rosa, Calabarzon, Philippines.

PHILJEC & PJS Members Heading to Tokyo for 45th ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting

PHILJEC and PJS representatives are scheduled to participate in the 45^th ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting (AJBM) set on December 12 to 14, 2019 at The Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. The Philippine delegation will be headed by its PHILJEC Chairman, Mr. Gerard B. Sanvictores.

This year’s meeting is centered on the theme “New Reality and Opportunity for ASEAN and Japan in the Face of New Global Trends” and aims to provide a venue for participants to launch a discussion over the future model of ASEAN-Japan business partnership against a backdrop of disruptive changes happening in the ASEAN economy and society as global business moves toward digitization.

Senior Vice Officer and COO of Softbank, Mr. Yasuyuki Imai and Director and Senior Executive Officer of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Mr. Yasuyuki Konuma will deliver their keynote addresses on the opening day of the meeting. Diverse and high-level participants from established Japanese companies and start-ups are also expected to present and join panel discussions during the 3-day event.

The AJBM is an annual meeting that promotes economic exchange among private sector businesses towards the stability and development of ASEAN and Japan. The 45^th AJBM is closely organized with important public organizations including METI, MoFA, JETRO and JOIN.

Inauguration of Ambassador Jose S. Laurel III Executive Room

PJFF inaugurated the Ambassador Jose S. Laurel III Executive room last October 3, 2019 after working closely with the late ambassador’s family. The room showcases carefully curated memorabilia from the decades the ambassador devoted to building mutual ties between the Philippines and Japan.

Present during the inauguration were Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines, Koji Haneda, and Mr. Francis C. Laurel, Executive Trustee of PJFF. Amb. Jose C. Laurel V, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Japan led the inaugural ribbon cutting.

PJLA Members Spend Fun Day at Family Bingo & White Elephant Sale

PJLA held its annual Family Bingo Social and White Elephant Sale last September 21, 2019 at The Philippines-Japan Friendship Center in Makati City. The annual special events are meant to raise funds to support the organization’s various socio-economic and cultural projects with the end goal of promoting and building stronger Philippines-Japan relations.

Corporate sponsors and friends of the organization provided prizes for the bingo games, which started from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Madame Ihoko Haneda and former PJLA President and Imperial Awardee, Ma. Elena Laurel Loinaz were among the games’ participants.

Members and advisers of the Board agreed to assess each member Php 1,000 for 5 bingo cards. Members also contributed unused items for the White Elephant Sale. Part of the proceeds of the activities will be donated to the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart (MSH Sisters) Academy in Marikina.
