THE PHILIPPINE INSTITUTE OF JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

The Philippine Institute of Japanese Language & Culture Foundation, Inc. (PIJLC) was established in 1991 to provide intensive, fulltime Nihongo training for young Filipinos aspiring to study in Japan. A brainchild of the late Ambassador Jose S. Laurel III, PIJLC is the country’s premiere not-for-profit institute that specializes in teaching high level Nihongo for aspiring students, Japanese language teachers and professionals. It is affiliated with the Philippines-Japan Friendship Foundation (PJFF) which underwrites its operations.

In 1997, the transfer of the Embassy of Japan from Makati to its current premises in Pasay City excluded space for the Nihongo Gakko of the Japan Information and Cultural Center (JICC) which it established in 1965. The Japanese Embassy sought the cooperation of Amb. Laurel and the PJFF who then accommodated the school by organizing a parallel teaching organization named Nihongo Center Foundation (NCF). NCF and PIJLC have a combined enrollment of over 1,200 students yearly who are taught by a faculty of 30 Filipino teachers of Nihongo.

In 1997, the PJFF constructed a 4-storey building on its property in R. Papa Street at the center of the University Belt of Manila which now houses the main campus of both PIJLC and NCF. The PJFF also provides space in its Makati office where PIJLC-NCF classes are also held.

The Philippine Institute of Japanese Language and Culture (PIJLC) offers Japanese-for-specific-purpose (JSP) courses such as Translation, Business Japanese, JLPT N1 Review, N2 and N3 intensive, Teacher Training for Native Japanese to help students grow into professional users of the Japanese language.
